Spicy Watermelon Margarita

Spicy Watermelon Margarita
If there’s one cocktail I almost always order in a restaurant, it’s a spicy margarita. So, I just had to share this summery version with you, which features my favourite seasonal fruit: watermelon.

I love making this for guests because it’s made in one go in the blender. There’s no need to play bartender all evening — just fill the glasses with ice and serve! The watermelon adds a natural sweetness that perfectly balances the slight kick of the jalapeño, while the Tajín on the rim of the glass adds a salty, tangy and spicy touch that makes all the difference.

Good to know
  • If you prefer a milder cocktail, start with half a jalapeño. You can always add more to taste.
  • The riper and sweeter your watermelon, the better your margarita will taste. It really is the star ingredient of this recipe!
  • Remove the foam after blending the cocktail to achieve a smoother texture and more elegant presentation.
  • Prepare the mixture a few hours in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Then, when it’s time for drinks, all you’ll have to do is fill the glasses with ice cubes and serve.
Frequently asked questions

The mixture will keep in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Give it a good stir before serving, as the watermelon juice may separate slightly if left to stand for too long.

Not necessarily! Using half a jalapeño gives a fairly subtle heat. If you like spicy cocktails, use the whole chilli or add a little more.

Preparation
  • Blend the watermelon, jalapeño, lime juice, tequila, Cointreau and simple syrup together in a blender until smooth. Use a spoon to skim off any excess foam from the top of the mixture.
  • Mix the lime zest with the Tajín salt on a small plate.
  • Rub the rim of a glass with a lime wedge. Dip the rim of the glass in the salt mixture. Add a few ice cubes to the glass and fill it with the watermelon margarita mixture. Repeat for as many margaritas as you would like!
