Lettuce Burgers

Lettuce Burgers

I wanted to share with you a recipe that I love to make on weeknights! My lettuce burgers are light and super satisfying! The sauce is delicious and you probably already have all the ingredients at home.

For the toppings, it’s all about personal preferences, but I personally LOVE caramelized onions in my burgers and there has to be a LOT of dill pickles!

Enjoy!

Frequently asked questions

Sambal oelek is a chili paste from Southeast Asia made primarily from chili peppers, vinegar, and salt. Unlike other sauces, sambal oelek is quite simple, really emphasizing the taste of the chili pepper.

Yes, it is spicier than Sriracha because it contains fewer ingredients that would soften the taste. However, the level of spiciness can vary from brand to brand.

Preparation

Caramelized Onions

  • In a nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium heat and caramelize onion with salt for 10 minutes, covered, stirring often.
  • Deglaze with balsamic vinegar and cook for a further 3 minutes. Set aside on a plate.

Burger Sauce

  • In a small bowl, combine all sauce ingredients.

Assembly

  • In the same non-stick skillet, heated over medium-high heat, cook the patties for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Add cheese slices to patties and cover pan. Cook for a further 1-2 minutes, or until cheese is melted.
  • Spread the inside of each piece of lettuce with the burger sauce. Add caramelized onions to two of the pieces, followed by burger patties and pickles. Close the burger with the remaining lettuce pieces. Enjoy with chips or sweet potato fries!
